I caved in!
I did it. I joined Facebook. In less than one week I have 102 friends and lots of writing on my "wall". I've been bitten by a "vampire" (aka my friend Justin) and poked by another friend. In general I have a good impression of the site; it has allowed me to find some people that I haven't talked to in ages. Some of my friends are doing really fascinating things (being mothers! being professors! being photographers!) and living in far flung places like Australia and Spain.
I told a date the other day that I had joined and he told me he thought the site was too invasive. I think that the site is only as invasive as you allow it to be. Each user can share whatever information she wants, so people can give as little or as much information as they deem appropriate. When I go looking for a job in the future, I'll be sure to hide all the incriminating pictorial evidence.
While I don't believe that this site will replace the pleasure of actually hearing new and exciting things directly from friends and loved ones, it does provide me with what I sometimes don't hear about: the daily activities and attitudes of my friends.
If you're reading this and are on Facebook, then let's be friends!
