I just keep getting faster
Where does all my speed come from these days?!?! Last night was the NYRR Wall Street run to benefit the American Heart Association. The 5km (3.1 mile) course had us snaking through the streets of lower Manhattan, past the World Trade Center site and around the bottom of the island past Battery Park. My goal was to break 26 minutes.
I don't know how many people ran it, but the highest number I saw on someone was 12002. That's a lot of people! Anyway, the course presented a great number of obstacles: lamp posts, traffic poles, slippery metal plates and manhole covers, pedestrians and so on, which made it so much more exciting than running around Central Park. There were no clocks at the mile markers like usual, so I really had no idea how we were doing, although my side gave me an indication after mile 2. Get a load of my official time: 24:45 with a mile pace of 8:15! This is a vast improvement over my previous pace of 8:48/mile and definitely the fastest 5k I've ever run. *Patting myself on the back*
After the race Ronit and I stopped into a couple of bars and got some drinks bought for us, even though we were slightly sweaty and crusty looking. It must have been our euphoric runner's high shining through the mud flecks and crazy, humidity-inspired hair horns. :)
